What is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based treatment that builds communication, play/leisure, social and life skills, while reducing competing behaviors, like tantrums, refusal, aggression, or self-injury that stand in the way of progress. All behavior happens for a reason. ABA looks at each child as an individual, searches for the what and why of their behavior, and then replaces the behaviors that are holding them back with skills that will move them forward. While ABA is not only for people with autism, its principles and methods have been proven to be especially effective in the areas where most people with autism need support.
⬗
Early
Ages 2-6
Early intervention first focuses on establishing a form of functional communication, since that is the foundation of all other independent skills. Communicating needs and wants is essential for everyone. Additionally, play skills are built and shaped during this period to encourage engagement with the surrounding world, plant learning opportunities, and facilitate social interactions. School-readiness skills are woven into all treatment plans to prepare children for the demands and routines of a classroom. Any competing behaviors, such as tantrums or aggression, are reduced and replaced with missing skills.
⬘
Pre-Adolescent
Ages 7-12
Pre-adolescent intervention builds on already established skills and takes them to the next level. Communication skills move past the basic needs and wants and enter into more advanced areas of group and social interaction. Any missing learning skills are identified and taught. Life skills, including self-care, community involvement, and family partnerships are introduced, adapted or expanded based on individual needs. Social skills, both with adults and peers, are practiced. Collaboration with schools, other therapy providers, and any others involved with the child help keep everyone on the same page.
⬙
Adolescent
Ages 13+
Adolescent intervention further focuses on identifying and filling in any gaps in communication and social skills. Each person is supported to reach the highest level of independence possible for them in the areas of self-care, social interactions, and work skills.
A Road To Progress
For growing children to gain independence, they must develop strengths in two areas: communication and social skills.
Communication to let others know their needs, wants, thoughts, and feelings.
Social skills to share the world around them with their family, friends, and the community.
For many children with autism, deficits in these areas hold them back from where they need or want to be. ABA is not about reaching a destination. It’s about supporting and guiding children and families through small gains each day that lead to progress on the paths that matter most.
What Makes Us Different?
Flexible
We address the behaviors where and when they occur, not just during your regularly scheduled session. If your preschooler has behavior issues at the grocery store, we go to the store with you. If your school-ager has struggles at bedtime, we have a parent training session during your nighttime routine. You don’t live in a box, and at Progress Road ABA, your child’s therapy doesn’t either. We go with you when and where you need us.
Family-Centered
At Progress Road ABA, parents and caregivers are not on the sidelines, but they are essential, active participants in the treatment of their children. We are not here just to treat your child for a time. We are here to support you in building skills your entire family can use for a lifetime. Weekly caregiver training sessions, which can include siblings, grandparents, and more, are an essential part of treatment at Progress Road ABA.
Hands on
Progress Road ABA gives you access to our extensive library of learning materials. Each month, you will receive a supply of games, toys, and activities tailored to fit your child’s individual learning goals. These can be used by your family outside of sessions to reinforce and build upon the lessons being learned. This targeted practice can help your child master skills more quickly.
